WNBA team Houston Comets’ guard Janeth Arcain said goodbye to Brazil’s
national women’s basketball team on Tuesday, in the final match at the
Pan American Games, in which they ended up with a loss to the US team.

Although the hosts led with a slight advantage in the first three
quarters, they did not keep the pace up to the end of the game. The
Americans, relying on their U-21 team, culminated at last to mark a final
79-66 score.

The defeat did not prevent the public at Rio’s Multipurpose Arena from
standing up and applauding Arcain, who finished the match with the ball
in her hands. The 38-year-old player left the court in tears.

Janeth dos Santos Arcain belongs to a generation of Brazilian players
that reached the highest level ever achieved in the country’s women’s
basketball. They won the Pan Am gold in Havana’s Games, in 1991, and the
FIBA World Championship in 1994, apart from the Olympic silver in 1996,
in Atlanta, USA.

Legendary players like Hortencia Marcari and Paula Goncalves took part in
the same group, but retired earlier than Arcain, who also got a bronze in
the 2000 Sydney Olympics for the team. The guard is the second top scorer
in the team’s history, with an average of 17.6 points per game.

On the WNBA website, Arcain is regarded as “the only player in the Comets
history to play in all 220 games,” and won a “Most Improved Player of the
Year” prize in 2001. She was one of the original players selected in
first draft held by the US national association, in 1997.

The Pan Am final on Tuesday also marked the farewell of the Brazilian
head coach Antonio Carlos Barbosa, who took over the women’s team for the
first time in the 1976-1984 period, and returned to the position in 1997.

The U.S. Olympics Committee (USOC) announced on Monday that five U.S.
Olympic hopefuls and one U.S. Paralympic hopeful will travel to Beijing
for the USOC Beijing Goodwill Tour.

The trip, on Aug. 1-5, commemorates the one-year-out date of the 2008
Olympic Games, which begin Aug. 8, 2008, with the Opening Ceremonies in
Beijing, the USOC said in a statement e-mailed to Xinhua.

The athletes participating in the tour include three Olympians and one
Paralympian, and all six are training to qualify for the 2008 Olympic and
Paralympic Games. In addition, three have Chinese ancestry. They
represent the sports of archery, badminton, BMX cycling (making its
Olympic debut in Beijing), fencing, table tennis and Paralympic swimming.

Their visit include press conferences, broadcast sessions, photo
opportunities and public appearances, the statement said.

The athletes include:

– Howard Bach, badminton. Bach, together with his partner Tony Gunawan,
won the 2005 World Championships doubles title, the first world title
ever won by U.S. badminton athletes. Bach was born in Saigon, Vietnam,
and moved to San Francisco when he was 3 years old.

– Gao Jun, Table Tennis. After winning a silver medal at the 1992
Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, for her native country of China, Gao
became a U.S. citizen and will train to compete for the United States in
2008. She is a three-time Olympian (1992, 2000, 2004) and has been a
member of the U.S. National Team since 1997. She is the top female table
tennis athlete in the United States, currently ranked 16th in the
world.She studies economic trade at the East China University of Science
and Technology in Shanghai, China.

– Lindsay Pian, Archery. Pian is ranked No. 3 in the United States and
is attending the 2007 Pan American Games and World Archery Championships.
Her father, Robert, is a first generation Chinese-American and both of
her grandparents are from the Beijing/Tianjin area. Her grandfather was a
civil engineer and worked on the Yangtze River Three Gorges dam during
its conceptual stages.

– Erin Popovich, Paralympic Swimming. In her first Paralympic Games in
2000, Popovich won a whopping six medals – three gold and three silver
-and set four world records in the process. She put together what may
have been the most impressive performance of any athlete at the 2004
Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece, where she competed in seven events
and came home with seven gold medals. Popovich was born with
achondroplasia, a genetic disorder of bone growth that is evident at
birth.

– Donny Robinson, BMX Cycling. Robinson turned pro in 2002 and has since
become the top BMX rider in the world. His latest career victory was
winning the 2006 National Bicycle League (NBL) pro title. He has
transcended physical stereotypes to become a BMX superstar. At 5′5″ and
150 lbs, he dominates a sport full of 6′0″, 200 lbs athletes.

– Iris Zimmerman, Fencing. Zimmerman competed at the 2000 Olympic Games,
finishing fourth in the team foil event and 11th in individual foil. She
had all but hung up her sword until the IOC brought back the women’s team
foil event for 2008 after its absence in 2004. She was a campaign worker
for California Democratic candidate Steve Westly, but put her career on
hold to train to compete in China, her mother’s homeland.

outh Africa led a medal sweep on Saturday in the track and field of the
ninth All-Africa Games in Algiers, capital of the North African country
Algeria.

South African runners completed a clean sweep of all the three medals in
the high-profile men’s 400m hurdles. Louis Van Zyl crossed the finish
line first by clocking 48.74 seconds, with Pieter de Villiers second and
Alwin Myburgh third.

Chris Harmse, also from South Africa, set a striking performance since
his first attempt in the men’s hammer throw of the Games. He threw 76.73
meters in the third try and secured his champion position.

At 34, Harmse became only the fifth athlete in the history of the All
Africa Games to win three successive titles in the same event.

Mohsen Mohamed Elenany of Egypt was second at 72.00 meters and Tunisian
Saber Souid, silver medalist in the last All-Africa Games in Abuja,
Nigeria, finished third at 70.01.

Contributing to South Africa’s gold rush with Van Zyl and Harmse were
Janice Josephs, in the women’s long jump with a clearing of 6.79 meters,
and Elizna Naude, in the women’s discus throw with the result of 58.40
meters.

The construction site in the western suburbs of Chengdu, in Sichuan
Province, looked much like any other. It all started when a bulldozer
driver heard a scraping sound as his machine bit deep into the ground: he
struck a collection of golden, jade and bronze objects. Workers and
passersby snapped up the treasures and scurrying off. Those too late to
get anything, disgruntled, report the find to the police. And that’’s
how, in February 2001, the world learned about the relics of a mysterious
3,000-year-old Jinsha kingdom in the mountains of southwest China.

“Jinsha culture is unique, quite different from cultures in other parts
of China, but is scarcely mentioned by Chinese historians,” said Zhu
Zhangyi, a veteran archaeologist in Sichuan and deputy-curator of the
Jinsha Museum. “The harsh geography made it difficult for outsiders to
enter the kingdom and so it was able to preserve its endemic culture.”

Police have been able to recover most of the relics purloined from the
construction site — about 100 items in all, but no one can confidently
claim that they have recovered everything.

In the past six years, the site has yielded up about 6,000 gold, jade,
bronze and stone artifacts, tens of thousands of pottery items and also
hundreds of elephant tusks. Gold fever

Jinsha means ”gold sand”. True to its name, the site has proved
extraordinarily rich in gold relics.

“Chinese people typically use gold as jewellery — earrings, bracelets or
necklaces — but Jinsha people used gold for sacrificial purposes. They
made gold masks, gold headware and strange, horn-shaped objects in finely
worked gold,” said Sun Hua, an archaeologist from Beijing University.
